DIY Washing Powder
Updated: Sep 14
Even though we love using oils aromatically, there are plenty of other ways to use them, including cleaning.
Adding oils to your washing, not only makes your clothes smell amazing, they help cleanse and disinfect. Add a few drops of Lemon, Tea Tree, Lavender or Eucalytptus for their antibiotic, antifungal and antiseptic properties
Here's my recipe for DIY Washing Powder - No nasties, no artificial fragrances and easy and cheap to make!
This recipe makes enough powder to last my family of 4 a minimum 3 months.
2 parts washing soda 2 parts powdered soap (or powdered coconut soap) 1 part borax 1 part Bicarb 1 part Himalayan rock salt 20-40 drops of essential oil
Mix your oil into the rock salt, making sure there are no lumps.
Chuck all ingredients into your thermomix or a large bowl and mix until combined. Mixing the ingredients will product some dust, try not to inhale it. It's not pleasant. yep, speaking from experience.
Store the powder in a jar or container and add 2tbs - 1/4 cup to each load.
I use and recommend BLANTs to purchase all the ingredients in bulk to save $$
*this recipe is what works for me. Depending on your machine and water quality, you may have different results.
TIP - using white vinegar in the fabric softener compartment means you can get rid of fabric softener!! Softeners are full of artificial fragrances and other toxic chemicals which are terrible for your health and the environment. Not to mention they actually put a coating on the fabric which makes them less water absorbent.
